To many the simple task of breeding and caring for your goldfish seems like an easy thing to do – but if done wrong could kill all your fish

goldfish care and breedingI have been keeping and breeding goldfish and other fish for many years and know that the smallest change can drastically affect the health of your fish.

Living in South Africa does not help one bit as we constantly get power failures and an interesting thing they call “load shedding” These sort of problems will cause more than the normal levels of support needed to have for the care and breeding of goldfish – and any fish for that matter.

In fact as recently as last week we lost a handful of perfectly healthy goldfish because the power was down for about 12 hours.

I would like to share a few simple tips that will help you with the care of your fish, goldfish or any other and at the same time give you some reassurance that owning and caring for a pet such as a goldfish can be very rewarding and a great pet to own and care for.

  • Firstly remember that the health of your goldfish is directly connected to the health of the water in the tank. Seriously -  You would be surprised as to how many people neglect the filtration aspects of the fish tank and then are shocked when their goldfish start to die.
  • Never touch your fish – unless in an emergency – to pick it up if it has jumped out of its tank. For that matter you should always have a cover over your goldfish tank to ensure that they cannot jump out of the tank at all.
  • Only place their food into the water – do not try to feed your goldfish by hand. We have many germs and infections that could directly harm your fish.
  • Do not put too many goldfish into the tank as this will put undue pressure on the oxygen levels of your tank. Less oxygen will put your fish into a stressful situation.
  • Be very careful when you add new ornaments to your tank. There are all sorts of parasites and infections in pieces of wood and rocks that you might want to add to your tank.
  • Watch the size of the gravel that you add to your tank, as small pieces can choke the fish
  • Algae eating fish will not make very good companions for your goldfish as they will suck the slime coat off your goldfish and leave the fish open to infections.
  • Do not mix different types of goldfish in one tank, as each type of gold fish have needs that could differ from the other more common types.

Finally before I run away – if you are reading this page with the thought of getting some goldfish as pets – Please be very sure that you are willing to take the full responsibility for the care of these fantastic pets. Rather choose to ask other fish tank owners for advice if you are not sure about the decision.

However I can say from a personal point of view that I love the fact that I own fish pets of all sorts (I have numerous tanks) and find the care of the fish very therapeutic.

Correct advice for the care of your goldfish should come from professionals.

Please make sure that the pet store that you use to get your fish has someone there who can give you correct advice and help with all your goldfish needs.
